You may be thinking about getting chickens for your backyard. You may have many reasons, such as taking care of ticks, harvesting eggs, or just keeping them as pets. Whatever your reason, chickens can be a great addition to many backyards.
But there are some factors that you may want to consider before getting backyard chickens. First, consider where you are located. Are you in a city? Are your neighbors close to you? These types of situations can make it uncomfortable for your neighbors when the chickens make noise.
Another thing to consider is the smell. Chickens that are well kept don’t smell a whole lot, but on a hot summer day, you and your neighbors will likely be able to smell them. And then there are local ordinances. Does your town or HOA have limits on pets? Do they even allow you or any of your neighbors to have “stock” (i.e. any type of farm animal)?
